Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Head injuries can range from relatively minor damage to the scalp and face such as lacerations, abrasions and bruising to more serious consequences involving damage to the brain, brain stem injuries, and other closed head injury complications.
Brain and head injuries can occur almost anywhere. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) most often occur in auto wrecks when an occupant was ejected from a vehicle at high speeds, roof crush or roof collapse in a rollover or an impact with a vehicle's interior during collision or in motorcycle accidents even with a helmet.
Loss of consciousness, even for a very brief period, is one of the clearest indications that the brain may have been affected by a blow to the head. A confusional state involving uncertainty about time, date, and location and/or a period of memory loss for the events surrounding the head injury are also indicators of trauma to the brain. Any of these symptoms following a blow to the head should be taken very seriously.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can significantly affect many cognitive, physical, and psychological skills. Physical deficit can include ambulation, balance, coordination, fine motor skills, strength, and endurance. Cognitive deficits of language and communication, information processing, memory, and perceptual skills are common. Psychological status is also often altered. Adjustment to disability issues are frequently encountered by people with TBI.
After a brain injury things that once were easy and familiar become strange and difficult. A great deal of mental effort is usually required to do things that required little or no effort before the brain injury. Work, school and personal relationships often suffer. Those effected often get extremely frustrated at their condition. The injured party becomes less efficient at their job and often they will not be able to return to work. Often they become unpredictable, unreliable, and sometimes violent. As you can imagine, a brain injury can affect the entire family.
