Each year drivers who drink or take drugs cause thousands of needless deaths and serious debilitating injuries. Anyone who has been injured or knows of a friend or family member that has been injured or killed by a drunk driver can understand the feeling of anger toward these selfish, irresponsible people.

The good news is that society doesn't put up with this type of selfish behavior. Injuries caused by drunk drivers may lead to a recovery of punitive damages intended to set an example to discourage others from driving while intoxicated.

Punitive damages are in addition to general damages for injuries. Punitive damages caused by drunk driving are NOT dischargeable in bankruptcy. Punitive damages are not covered by a person's insurance policy, and an attorney may seek recovery personally from the defendant.

We don't care if it is alcohol, drugs or abuse of prescription pain medication- people under the influence have no business being on the road. And when they hurt or kill a person, society should condemn their behavior and make examples out of them.
